The benefits of a mastering engineer: A fresh pair of ears…
Whenever I get asked about the benefits of a mastering engineer, my initial answer normally surprises as it’s not always the first thing you think about. It’s not the fancy studio, massive speakers or discography…it’s a pair of fresh ears.Using a mastering engineer is an opportunity to partner up with someone to gain a chance to get a unique perspective on your music. My key phrase here is:
“You only get to hear a track for the first time once”.
This gives the mastering engineer a unique opportunity to make objective calls on how to get your music to sound its very best.
If you’re writing, recording and mixing your own music, spending weeks and months on one track, then having a fresh pair of ears is invaluable in creating a product ready for commercial release. You’ve probably heard the music so many times and can no longer make solid judgements. Sound familiar?
If you’re looking for an objective opinion about your mix, then a mastering engineer is the person for you. A fresh pair of ears can often pinpoint issues that you’ve become accustomed to hearing in your own work. A great mastering engineer will also be able to provide you with detailed notes on how they would improve certain elements of your mix. This will ensure that no stone is left unturned when it comes to making your song as good as it can possibly be.
